Bakehouse Renovation Update

This post is a little overdue, but the Bakehouse renovation is pretty much complete. All the interior work has now been done and we had a deep clean at the weekend. We’re really happy with the feel of the space and given that it’s a small cottage we have maximised the usable areas well with a fully equipped kitchen installed and a lovely shower room.

We employed a local garden landscaping company to give us a hand to get the Bakehouse garden up to scratch, they have re-turfed, rebuilt some brick beds, and extended a pathway into the new patio area. We have also put in some carefully planned outside lighting so hopefully this space will be a real gem once the summer arrives.

The next mighty task is to get the place furnished so we can offer it out as a B&B. We have a good idea how we want it to look but that requires a lot of small decisions and a lot of shopping! Not always easy to potter about the lovely shops in Lewes with an overexcited puppy…

The plan is eventually to offer a vegan breakfast, so with this in mind we have built an oak hatch through from the main house into the porch so we can deliver food through without disturbing guests. We have installed an old butlers bell to let guests know when their brekkie arrives which we hope will be a nice unique feature.

As with any renovation project there have been wrong decisions made along the way that we have learnt from. We have repainted the window reveals three time before finally deciding on the right colour and have wrongly ordered kitchen parts and appliances that didn’t fit only to have to return these and try again! Luckily all the companies that we have worked with both local and national have been very good and the process has been as straightforward as we could have hoped for. We have made good relationships with local woodyards and paint shops and will continue to use these contacts for the main house.
